Broad Brook is a section of the town of East Windsor, Connecticut, which was incorporated in 1768. East Windsor consists of 26.8 square miles in five distinct neighborhoods (the others being Warehouse Point, Scantic, Melrose and Windsorville). Surrounding towns include Windsor, South Windsor and Windsor Locks.

The 2000 U.S. Census estimated a population of slightly more than 4,000 Broad Brook residents.

In the 1830s the Phelps Manufacturing Company, a woolen mill, was built. It later became the Broad Brook Company. The company was liquidated in 1959.

The region was renowned for its lush farmland, particularly for growing tobacco and potatoes.

On the accompanying map a red asterik (*) marks the intersection of O'Melia and Norton Roads. The two familes for which they were named were major tobacco growers and were connected by marriage.

The O'Melias were from Athenry in County Galway, Ireland. They appear on this website because Emily Frances O'Melia (1860-1891) married William Francis Rabbett (1856-1948).

Emily's brother, John Joseph O'Melia (1854-1939), was one of Broad Brook's prominent citizens. He worked on the railroad after immigrating from Ireland but soon turned to tobacco farming. John married Mary Elizabeth Norton (1862-1945).
