Edward
Thomas Rabbitt (left) was the famous country music singer.
Eddie
was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 27, 1941. He grew up
in East Orange, NJ and began performing at the age of 12.
He dropped out of high school to play music in and around
New York City. At some point Eddie's parents were divorced.
For
a time he worked as an attendant at a mental hospital. At
the age of 16, and with a thousand dollars in his pocket,
Eddie moved to Nashville and worked as a songwriter. His
big break occured in 1970 when Elvis Presley recorded one
of his songs, "Kentucky Rain." His own career included
a string of #1 songs on the pop and country music charts.
He was known as a conservative performer featuring shows
with no off-color content.
Eddie
married Janine Girardi on his birthday in 1976.
He
left the music tour between 1986-89 after his second child
was born with a fatal liver ailment In March 1997 Eddie
was diagnosed with cancer. He stopped touring to undergo
radiation treatment and have part of his lung removed. He
died on May 7, 1998 at the age of 56. Eddie is
buried at Cavalry Cemetery in Nashville alongside his infant
son and father.
