Feb.
15 - Click here for your Final
Exam; it is due at the beginning of our
final class on Thursday, Feb. 18 (5:30 p.m.).
Feb.
8 - NO CLASS TONIGHT BECAUSE OF WEATHER!! Your
Multimedia
Presentation is due next Monday. Once I have approved
your topic prepare a 5-8 minute presentation using as many
forms of media as you can think of to illustrate it. Develop
an outline of speaking points but don't try to tell us everything
there is to know about the topic. Your presentation could
include a PowerPoint, paper handsouts, clips from movies,
books, magazine articles, newspaper articles, DVDs, music,
props, etc.
Also,
read the next two chapters. Instead of a Media Journal, take
the VALS
survey. Click on this link and take the 10-minute survey;
printout the results and write a brief paper on whether or
not you think your primary and secondary motivators are accurate.
The VALS survey is due on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Feb.
1 - Your next Media Journal (due Friday at 5:00 p.m.)
must be based on an article about either the magazine or newspaper
industry. Also, read Chapters 11-12. Be thinking about your
Multimedia Project; a one-paragraph proposal is due next Monday.
Jan.
25 - Download your midterm exam here.
The exam should be returned to me by 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
but you don't have to do a Media Journal this week. Read the
next two chapters for next Monday.
Jan.
19 - You've got two written assignments this week. By
Friday at 5:00 p.m., your weekly Media Journal is due. Next
Monday your Movie Review is due (use the same critical analysis
process you use in your Media Journals). Also, read the next
two chapters.
REMINDER:
because of Martin Luther King Jr. Day next Monday, we will
meet on Tuesday 1/19 at 6:00 p.m.
Jan.
11 - Your Movie Review is due two weeks from tonight (Jan.
25). Please identify the film you'd like to review for its
social and/or political content by this Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Your next Media Journal is also due on Friday; it must
specifically relate to how technology is changing the music
industry. For this assignment you may select a magazine
or newspaper article from the web. Make sure it is a news
article, not a commentary or editorial. Also, read Chapters
5 & 6.
As for
the Movie Review: watch the movie of your choice (after I
approve it) and write a 2-3 page essay about the social and/or
political issues raised by the movie. Explain how the movie
tried to influence the viewer. Was this attempt at audience
influence really the focus of the movie or just a passing
mention? Why do you think the filmmaker(s) did this? Were
they effective? How could they have been more effective?
Jan.
4 - Your first Media Journal is due by Friday at 5:00
p.m. All papers in this course should be double-spaced, minimum
font size 12. Here is a detailed
explanation of how to begin a Media Journal. This sample
will give you an idea of the objective. Also, read Chapter
1-4 and be prepared to discuss Mass Media. Be thinking about
your Movie Review; the outline is due next week.
